Phalaenopsis inscriptiosinensis Fowlie, 1983

Extract from opening original description :
For some eighteen months the author received color prints and dried flowers sent by Liem Khe Wie from Central Sumatran collection of a new species of Phalaenopsis of the section Zebrinae, akin to P. corningiana, P. sumatrana and P. zebrina. This species very distinctive in its 1.25" diameter flowers, which were delicately marked by cross-banding, some of which might be likened to fine Chinese caricature.

Liem Khe Wie brought this to my attention and suggested it appeared as if every once in awhile between the crossbands there appeared a neatly axecuted Chinese character, as if by the artisans of old. The plants were sent by him as "Phal. Chung Kuo" to the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum where they flowered in July 1982, having sepals and petals marked in same way as the color prints. Accordingly, it was decided to name the plant in memory of the millions of Chinese people who have lost their live in south east Asia in the political turmoil there, as "The Phalaenopsis provided with markings in Chinese, " or Phalaenopsis inscriptiosinensis Fowlie.
